What is Integrative Palliative Care?

 

Palliative care is defined by the World Health Organization as, "an approach that improves 

  • Physical symptom management using an integrative holistic approach

  • Nutrition counseling 

  • Emotional support to address depression, anxiety and emotional distress

  • Addressing social and spiritual aspects of care.

  • Education and involvement of care givers

 

Duration: 90 minutes

 

At Functional Holistic Healing, we develop a personalized treatment and comfort plan that integrates the conventional care with integrative palliative care. We work with primary care physicians, geriatricians and specialists to help patients use evidence based natural, safe and gentle modes of healing such as nutrition, mind body techniques and aromatherapy to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of their lives.

About Dr. Nadia Ali

 

Dr. Nadia Ali leads the program of Integrative Palliative Care. She is board certified in  Internal Medicine and Integrative Medicine. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine. She has completed a mini-fellowship in Geriatrics from Mount Sinai School of Medicine.


She has expertise in integrative palliative care for treatment of symptoms related to terminal illness such as depression, anxiety, stress, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, pain,  lymphedema, fatigue and weight loss. In addition, she focuses on prevention of complications related to the terminal illness.

Individuals undergoing a terminal illness face physical, emotional, social and spiritual distress. Palliative Care requires a multidisciplinary approach that alleviates symptoms, enhances comfort and improve the quality of their lives. It is also a challenging time for the caregivers who need support, help and guidance.

 

Integrative Palliative Care provides an evidence based approach that facilitates and guides the patients and their caregivers to identify and integrate complementary and alternative treatments that can empowers them to improve their quality of life as well as control their symptoms. It provides patients with more control over their symptoms. It recognizes and addresses physical, mental, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of care.

 

An important aspect of Integrative Palliative Care is the education and involvement of members of family in helping the patient make the necessary changes to improve their quality of life.
